John Sammons, A.A.S., NRP
I started in EMS in a small town in Southern New Jersey where I was a First Responder, then an EMT, and later a paramedic. Throughout my career I have been an instructor, preceptor, field training officer, supervisor, relief district chief, advanced practice paramedic, emergency room technician, firefighter, fire service lieutenant and fire service captain.
I was an EMT for a long time, and then after paramedic school I worked in and around Atlantic City, NJ for about a year before I moved to North Carolina, where I have been since 2012. Being in a large, mostly urban system has been a great learning experience and has helped me grow not only as a paramedic, but as a person. I have grown in recognizing the importance of education, continuous learning, being a mentor and a patient advocate. I have also learned the importance of looking at the world from a viewpoint different than my own.
I am now a married father of two in my 40s. I have definitely gained a new view of the world, and a new appreciation for it since I started out in EMS at 17 years old.
This page is part passing on things to hopefully help improve patient care, and part providing some inspiration to the folks out there trying to do what is right when it feels like nobody else is. It is also a cathartic place to write and get the ideas and thoughts I have out of my head and decompress a bit. I want to also share the stories of others and promote their voices.
I hope you enjoy the page, and the blog. Be safe and do good work.
